extreme-livingI love interesting architecture. One of the reasons that I love travel is that I love seeing interesting architecture. I took 4 years of drafting in high school heading towards a career in architecture until I discovered that love for a subject and talent for a subject are not the same thing. The new show Extreme Living on HGTV features the work of architects with considerably more success.

Each episode features two residential houses that are somewhere in the range from innovative to downright weird. My favorite so far as been a house that looks like it was either designed by Antonio Gaudi or Dr Seuss.

It’s one of the smallest and tallest homes you may ever see. Built on a 20-by-20-foot plot of land, this tiny Moroccan-style palace was only big enough for one room per floor. It shoots four stories straight into the air and has a foundation system that shoots nearly 50 feet down into the ground. Built entirely out of poured-in-place concrete, it’s a monument to clever space-saving techniques as well as an ode to the local artisans of Santa Barbara, Calif., whose custom craftsmanship fills the interior.
