In the wake of the success of the movie Juno it is not surprising that a television network would take on the topic of teen pregnancy. I had hope for the new ABC Family show The Secret Life of the American Teenager based on the previews that were heavily pushed on that network. The teenager in the series title is 15-year-old Amy (Shailene Woodley) who is a good student that gets pregnant the first time she has sex at band camp with an older popular boy. Molly Ringwald stars as Amy’s mother.
Unfortunately the show has not delivered on expectations. The pilot started strong but after that each member of my family dropped the show one by one. The writing and the actors just have not provided characters that are compelling. It may not be that the life of the american teenager is secret so much as it is that no one cares.
